Automotive Bearing Pullers
Bearing pullers are specifically applied by mechanics to remove wheel bearings from a vehicle’s suspension system. This important part is what allows the smooth spinning of a wheel. Despite its importance to the safe, proper functioning of a vehicle, it is one of those parts that most drivers never think about let alone worry about.

A wheel actually has both an inner and an outer wheel bearing attached. Both the inner and the outer bearings come into contact with a part called a race. Made of smooth metal and shaped like a ring, the race comes into contact with the actual ball bearings. Both bearings are attached to opposite sides of the disc, the component upon which the wheel installs. Wheel bearings do not fail with frequency, although they can for a variety of reasons. They can fail due to contamination of the lubricant, too much or too little lubricant or because the part is neglected for too long.
The different kinds of bearing pullers each have a shape that gives them their name. Among them are jaw-type pullers, H-type pullers, claw-arm pullers and heavy-duty hydraulic pullers. One or more of these tools may do the trick depending on the size of the bearing, the distance to reach and the amount of pulling force you need. Essentially, all bearing pullers do the same thing regardless of the variables. As many as three hook arms or clamps fit around the circumferential rim of the race. Directly centered between the hook arms is a large bolt. Once the arms are locked into place, the forcing screw is turned. As the bottom of the bolt presses against the axle of the vehicle, the pressure forces to tool back towards the operator, with the hook arms pulling out the wheel bearing with them.
A lot of torque or twisting force is necessary to force the wheel bearing out of the wheel assembly. A torque wrench or socket wrench may be used. Doing most of the work for you, use a hydraulic bearing puller which operates with an incredible amount of force. Certain pullers may have an adjustable spread that allows them to be effective on axles of different sizes.
