physics magnitude of downward vel?
A tennis ball of mass 57.0 g is held just above a basketball of mass 600 g. With their centers vertically aligned, both balls are released from rest at the same time, to fall through a distance of 1.10 m,
(a) Find the magnitude of the downward velocity with which the basketball reaches the ground.
m/s
Assume that an elastic collision with the ground instantaneously reverses the velocity of the basketball while the tennis ball is still moving down. Next, the two balls meet in an elastic collision.
(b) To what height does the tennis ball rebound?
m
This is a fun demo we used to use (incorrectly, as it turns out) to demonstrate core-collapse supernovae.
The basketball (mass M) rebounds from the floor with velocity +v. The tennis ball (mass m ) is still moving down with velocity -v. Conservation of momentum assures us that
M v0 - m v0 = M vb + m vt
where v0 is the initial speed, vb the final speed of the basketball, and vt the final speed of the tennis ball. And since the collision is elastic, we also know that
1/2 M vo² + 1/2 m vo² = 1/2 M vb² + 1/2 m vt²
You have two equations with two unknown velocities (vb and vt) since vo can be easily established from the distance of the fall. Solve them for vt, the final velocity of the tennis ball. Enjoy!
